Fishing in the Ludington area continues to be fair to good, but you have to be “on the fish”. The fish are here, but they aren’t always easy to find. Perhaps better than usual for this time in the season, but it can be spotty, day-to-day. Fishing has taken on a mid-season mode with most of the fish being Kings and the best fishing being from 50’ deep to well over 100’ deep in deeper water. Catches of Kings, with many in the 10 – 18 pound class are being taken, along with an occasional trout. The best catches were reported were in the northern areas in 100+’.
There have been some reports of good catches off the project in deeper water. Also, there have been some reports of concentration of bait and fish near the nets more or less, straight out and a little north. Some are trolling in much deeper water where mostly larger salmon are taken especially after the early bite. Also, the best fishing has consistently been either very early, just at sunrise or very late, just at, or near sunset. Mid-day fishing has been slow. Fishing along the bank at those times seems best, with fishing deep in deeper water most successful at other times in the day.
Fishing has been best with spoons on the higher lines, but rotators &paddles with flies are producing the most action on deeper lines. There as been an occasional mention of plugs, and meat rigs, also. Getting the baits away from the boat, and fishing a variety of depths and terminal gear will produce if one puts in the time. Lead core and copper lines of several lengths in the clear water and tend to be the best producers. Reports include lead core and copper lines of 100’ or 200’ or more.
Some Captains are producing on meat rigs running one or two in the mix with other types of baits.
Divers, especially wire divers are also producing action, both high and low, but in longer lengths which can reach far away from the boat and very deep.
