The Ludington Area Charterboat Association attempts to summarize the fishing over the past several days, providing general information about the fishing; the general location of the best fishing areas and the best depths and bait types.
In general we do not identify specific bait companies or individual baits.
Several LACA Captains post individual fishing reports which indicate the specific baits they have been using. Please check the LACA website for individual Captain fishing reports.
Fishing was much better this week, bordering on Very Good! and getting better every day. Some Captains are reporting excellent catches, some near limits. Fishermen from the boat ramps are finding more fish, also. As is often the case, early morning and late evening are the best bite times.
There was exceptional fishing in deep water early in the week before the big North on Wednesday. No one fished Wednesday. Thursday found a big cold water upwelling at Big and Little Sauble Points. But excellent fishing still existed in deep water. On Friday, good catches started coming again from the more near shore areas. A very good fishery exists today (Friday, Aug 12) at the pierheads, with some fish now in PM Lake and in the river. This will likely continue until the water warms back up. At this time of the season, it is useful to check the Coastwatch site for water temperature information.
Spoons were good this week, especially glowing spoons, also some medium or large rotators and paddles with flies. Meat rigs are also being mentioned frequently. Most fishermen are concentrating on King salmon, however, a few lakers were reported, and there were some Steelhead in the reports, especially early in the week.
We leaving up the photo of the big fish from last week because we are continuing to see more big fish every day. At least one 30+ pound fish was weighed in today, with many more in the 27 – 29 lb range. We haven’s seen so many large fish for 3 or 4 years.
A 32 pound fish was weighed in on last week:
Please continue to monitor our Net alert on our home page for any changes in the locations of tribal trap nets in the Ludington area. The “Net Alert” will be updated as new information becomes available. The current Alert has 11 nets located from the 43° ’50′s to the 43° ’59′s, from south of the Consumers Pumped Storage Plant to near the bathhouse area. Many of the nets in the locations last identified in the fall of 2010 are still in place. These net flag buoys are still in the same locations as last year. Please check back frequently. Net location data is updated whenever possible.
In general we do not identify specific bait companies or individual baits.
Some LACA Captains also produce individual fishing reports which indicate the specific baits they have been using. Please check the LACA website for individual Captain fishing reports.
Fishing was spotty this this week. One Captain reported taking 14 one day and 4 the next. North winds pushed in some cold water on Monday, but it has mostly dissipated now. Fishermen from the boat ramps are having a hard time finding the fish. As is often the case, early morning and late evening are the best bite times.
Captains are searching wide area of water for the fish. However most of the fishing has been to the north, usually in water deeper than 100’ There does not seem to be any particular baits that work better than others, however there seems to be more interest in plugs this week. Many are still using spoons, some medium or large rotators and paddles with flies. Meat rigs are also being mentioned. Lead core, copper wire, dipsy divers fished deep seem to be most effective. Lake trout are also being taken on or near the bottom from 80′ to 130′. Slow trolling w/ p-nuts type gear is common for Lake Trout. There have been only a few Steelhead in the reports. There were no reports from fishermen to the south or in deep water in the past few days.
Please continue to monitor our Net alert on our home page for any changes in the locations of tribal trap nets in the Ludington area. New this year: The University of Michigan has placed a research buoy in the Ludington area. It is located at N 43°59.599′ W 86° 33.567′ in 90′. The buoy’s information includes wind, wave and temperature data, including temperature data from the surface to more than 70′ deep.
Special Note: Unfortunately, the buoy has had problems and has not been in operation for the past two weeks. An effort to repair it is scheduled for this weekend.
The buoy is currently off-line for repair. It is hoped that it will be up again, soon.
It is still on station, and the light is still working.
The information can currently be found on the internet at: http://uglos.engin.umich.edu/station_page.php?station=45024.. Scroll down the page past the buoy image for complete wind/wave/temperature data.
The buoy is located approximately 4 miles from the pier head on a bearing of 288°: N 43°59.599’ W 86° 33.567’ in 90′. It has a white light, which flashes on a 5 second cycle. It is presents a very bright image on Radar. Please be careful to avoid boating and fishing in the immediate vicinity. Give it a wide berth w/ your divers and long lines.
In general we do not identify specific bait companies or individual baits.
Fishing was slow this week. The bait has mostly disappeared. This week fishers were searching all areas from south to north and even out to 400′ Salmon are being caught in scattered areas & depths, from near the break to as deep as 180′ or 200′. More Lake Trout are being seen in the catches this year.
Captains are searching wide area of water for the fish. There does not seem to be any particular baits that work better than others. Some are using spoons, some medium or large rotators and paddles with flies. Meat rigs are also being mentioned. The water is quite warm, so fishing has moved to deeper water. Lake trout are also being taken on or near the bottom from 80′ to 130′. Slow trolling w/ p-nuts type gear was common for Lake Trout. There have been only a few Steelhead in the reports.

The Ludington Area Charterboat Association attempts to summarize the fishing over the past several days, providing general information about the fishing; the general location of the best fishing areas and the best depths and bait types.
In general we do not identify specific bait companies or individual baits.
Fishing has picked up on the last day or two. There is a lot of bait. Some say the most they have seen in recent years. This week most of the fishing was concentrated in the area of Big Point. Salmon are being caught in scattered areas & depths, from near the break to as deep as 180′ or 200′.
Most Captains are mentioning spoons in blue, green and mixed colors. Large rotators and paddles with flies and meat rigs are also being mentioned. The water is very clear at this time, so fishing far from the boat with divers and long lines has been successful. Lake trout are also being taken on or near the bottom from 60′ to 110′. Slow trolling w/ p-nuts type gear was common for Lake Trout. There continues to be no mention of Steelhead in any of the reports. There were no reports from fishermen to the south or in deep water in the past few days.
Please continue to monitor our Net alert on our home page for any changes in the locations of tribal trap nets in the Ludington area. The “Net Alert” will be updated as new information becomes available. Note: New information has been difficult to obtain this season to date. The Association is attempting to find the number and locations of currently deployed nets. Anecdotal information suggests that there are 11 nets located from the 43° ’50′s to the 43° ’59′s. From south of the Consumers Pumped Storage Plant to near the bathhouse area. Many of the nets in the locations last identified in the fall of 2010 are still in place. These net flag buoys are still in the same locations as last year. Please check back frequently. Net location data is updated whenever possible.

The Ludington Area Charterboat Association attempts to summarize the fishing over the past several days, providing general information about the fishing; the general location of the best fishing areas and the best depths and bait types.
In general we do not identify specific bait companies or individual baits.
Fishing has been generally slow for the past week or so. On most days, it has been slow, with only a few fish. There is a lot of bait. Some say the most they have seen in recent years. Some fishers believe the enormous schools of young alewives has been satiating the fish to the point that they won’t take a bait. Over the past weekend, most of the fishing was concentrated in the area of Big Point. Salmon were hard to come by, but some were taken with meat rigs. Lake trout were being taken on or near the bottom from 60′ to 90′. Slow trolling w/ p-nuts type gear was common. There was no mention of Steelhead in any of the reports.
Most Captains are mentioning spoons in blue, green and mixed colors. The water is very clear at this time, so fishing far from the boat with divers and long lines has been successful. There were no reports from fishermen to the south or in deep water.
From south of the Consumers Pumped Storage Plant nearly to Big Point Sauble. Further anecdotal information seems to indicate that nets in the locations last identified in the fall of 2010 are still in place, but are not fishing. However, those net flag buoys are still in the same locations as last year. We are trying very hard to completely identify the new locations to the south. Please check back frequently. we expect to learn and post the location of all the nets soon.

The Ludington Area Charterboat Association produces a weekly fishing report during the Ludington area Lake Michigan fishing season. Our reports attempts to summarize the fishing over the past several days, providing general information about the successfulness of fishing, the general location of the best fishing locations and the best depths and bait types.
In general we do not identify specific bait companies or individual baits.

Fishing has been erratic for the past week or so. On some days the fishing has been spectacular, with limit catches. On other days, it has been slow, with only a few fish. There is a lot of bait. Some say the most they have seen in recent years.
Fish have been found from near the piers to far north of Big Point Sauble. Most Captains are mentioning spoons in blue, green and mixed colors. The water is very clear at this time, so fishing far from the boat with divers and long lines has been successful. Most fishermen are fishing in 80′ to 150′ of water, but at least one boat reported catching fish on the out-troll all the way out to 400′, catching fish more than 150′ deep.
